History

Community Care Health Centers

In 1969, 10 mental health interns built a community hotline for substance abuse counseling. Determined to address the overwhelming health care need in the western Orange County area, they opened a store front office with a total of $200 and gave birth to CCHC. From that humble origin over 36 years ago, CCHC has grown into one of the largest unaffiliated non-profit community clinic network in Orange County. CCHC’s chartered mission is to lead in providing high quality, affordable, accessible health care to people in need. CCHC serves the entire Orange County and targets the uninsured and medically underserved. After over 36 years of providing health care access, CCHC has emerged a key stakeholder in the local health care safety net with 35 collaborative partnerships countywide and a patient capacity of 30,000 unduplicated patients and 90,000 patient visits by the end of 2007.

CCHC’s health care goal is grounded on community needs, CCHC will strengthen its position as a recognized and integral contributor to the health care safety net in Orange County. The pursuit of this goal established two medium-term health care objectives, namely to raise capacity in responding to increased community need and to continue playing a leadership role in the evolution of Orange County’s health care safety net for the low-income, uninsured, other medically underserved populations. CCHC’s clinical and health care providers of 168 is culturally and linguistically competent for the 3 major ethnic populations served, (i.e., Latino, Asian, and White).

CCHC’s milestone accomplishment is its designation as a Federally-Qualified Health Center ‘Look-Alike’ (FQHCLA). This designation is a win for the larger community. As a result of the FQHCLA designation, CCHC is able to draw federal dollars to support the health care needs of Orange County residents.

Additionally, as the largest stand-alone nonprofit health center in Orange County, CCHC has completed a 4-clinic expansion designed to address the health care of Orange County’s poor and medically underserved. After two years in development, CCHC’s efforts have successfully accomplished the following:

  • Startup of a new women’s health center in Santa Ana in September 2005 and the planned addition of pediatrics and limited general medicine in the same clinic by the end of 2006
  • Transfer of ownership of two existing women’s health clinics – one in Santa Ana, another in Orange -- from a hospital owner in January 2006
  • Startup of a pediatric clinic in Santa Ana due to open in October 2006

Four new community clinics are part of this clinic expansion initiative, whose addition widens CCHC’s service area to include not only the western region of the county but also Central Orange County, where documented health care barriers and health disparity abound. This area is home to nearly half of the county’s uninsured. With its 4 expansion clinics, CCHC aims to create local capacity for 20,000-30,000 new appointment slots targeted for the low-income, medically-underserved and the uninsured in Orange County.
